INTERVIEW

Mark Daniel - "Music is everything I am..."

Mark Daniel-Music is everything I am...
You live in Milford, CT - "A Small City with a Big Heart" famous for its Oyster Festival and "Righteous Kill" movie (starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro). Do you feel an emotional connection to this place?

I do feel emotional connection to Milford. In time I will likely move away but know that I will always have special place in my heart. Milford generally has cool people, a few great bars, breweries and its close to New York City and Boston. It suits me well at this time.

City life can be a good source of inspiration. Does Milford appear in your songs?

Milford itself doesn't appear in my songs but it does inspire. I live in a generally busy part of the city which is walking distance to few beaches, parks, restaurants and bars. I like being around action at this point in my life.

This where we live influences who we are. At least theoretically. Marvin Gaye sang "wherever I lay my hat, that's my home". Have you thought about moving to a bigger city?

Yes, I do believe it does. But in terms of developing sound and music not so much. There is a huge amount of information available today. Once sounds and scenes were isolated by communication and travel restrictions, the result being regional sounds, songs, techniques such as Memphis Soul, Texas Blues, Chicago Blues, Detroit Rock & Soul, New York Punk and Alternative, to name a few...now it seems music has become a large melting pot. Its both good and could be viewed as bad if someone is a purest.

How would you rate local music scene? Following press reports it seems that not much is happening there. Is that true?

Whatever is left of a scene could use a boost of energy but I may be a poor judge of that being that I don't participate locally much. It's fun when I do and feel those that do play locally might agree with the press.

Before you started your artistic career you attended to the Berklee College of Music. What did you learn as a student?

Mostly I think I learned to never stop learning and searching for inspiration. There are a lot of amazing writers, musicians and artists in this great world of ours and I find it incredibly important to keep and open heart and open mind.

And what do you think about college education? Is it a good choice for young people who are looking for their way of life? Opinions on this subject are very divided.

I loved my experience. It allowed me to focus for long hours a day on music in an environment that is filled with artistic energy. I don't believe its for everyone. There are a large number of people who have an incredible amount of heart and offer the world great things that may not need to follow that direction. In terms of music I think of Dennis Chambers, the drummer. He is self taught and is absolutely one of the greatest living musicians.

You're a singer, songwriter and the guitarist. Which of these skills is closest to your heart? Which of them do you enjoy the most?

I started singing when I was very little..probably wasn't very good at first but soon connected with guitar in a major way followed by a great connection with singing. It all comes together in my songs. I've been writing songs ever since I was able to play a couple chords and sing, generally, in key. I absolutely love it. Writing is truly the most accomplished feeling I have in my life followed by performing and recording.

After 12 years of various recording sessions and tours you can finally enjoy the fullness of creative independence. You're the owner of home studio that you purchased to focus on your music. How does it feel? You are the master of your own fate now.

It feels good..but there is so much I want to do. My past experiences have allowed me to learn about the different directions I can go artistically. I always strive to work with inspired people who help bring out the best in me as I hope to bring out in them. My home studio helps me develop my songs better than in years past and allows a great deal of freedom.

You began collaborating with drummer Mickey Curry who's known for his work with Bryan Adams. You recorded 15 songs together and some of them can be heard on your EP album called "Repair to New". How long did you know each other?

We met in January of 2014 through a mutual friend. I was listening to Steve Winwood's album "Back in the High Life," when the song "Take It As It Comes," came on. I checked to see who played the drums and found it was Mickey. By pure coincidence I asked a friend if he knew him and he did. I sent him my demos in November of 2013 and we started recording January 2014. He is a power house drummer..I have been a fan of his since he was with Hall & Oates. It's great working with him.

Who was the initiator of this project?

I initiated because I really wanted my songs completed but was mellow putting it into motion. I'm always recording so there is likely going to be a significant amount of material available to listen to but in different stages of completion.

I mentioned about the creative independence but what it means today? Can you feel like a fully independent artist in a world ruled by money?

My one issue is when bands and artists sell themselves short for a quick sale. There seems to be a lot of commercials with artists that want to sound like popular bands rather then taking the time to search for a develop something unique. This is not a new phenomena. It seems to have always been this way. I can't blame some of these bands because it is incredibly difficult to find yourself. The positive to the struggle is that most notable music and art has come from a struggle. As difficult as it might be, sacrifice and hardship has to be embraced...also taking a breathe for a good beer helps sometimes too.

Do you like what you hear on the radio these days? The music industry is constantly changing. It is moving in the right direction?

I own most of the older music that's played on the radio so I tend to stay away from Classic Rock on the radio. Some new stuff is good and some great. People say often that music was better in the past and I understand why they say this. There is comfort in the past because we've all lived through it at least to some degree. There are great musicians and artists out now! Perhaps the industry could be repaired. It seems to have not fully recovered from the crash a few years ago. But I am a life long optimist and believe great music will always be made no matter how easy difficult it is to find.

Tell me about your future plans. What can we expect from you in the following months?

That will in large part be determined by how people will react to my music. I guarantee that I will be writing, recording and performing but where and how is to be determined. I'm excited about the future ..It is completely unknown to me but I've been trying to embrace the unknown lately.

Music is the most important part of your life?

It is me. I am music. Music is everything I am and so maybe best answer would be that my loved ones are the most important thing in life after a little self preservation.

Can you imagine world without music?

For people like me it's unthinkable. I have had a few conversations with friends that are not into music and they claim they can go without it for long periods. I imagine this goes to show that we are all wired a little differently.

And if the world would end tomorrow, what will your last words be?

Thank you and I love you..see you on the flip side.

Thank you for your time.
