INTERVIEW

Mad Lung - "Music is my release..."

Mad Lung-Music is my release...
After 5-year hiatus you have finally released your new album called "Reality Check". Let me guess - it feels good to be back, huh?

Truly my friend I’d have to say... It’s feels exceptionally good to be able to release this album. I mean, what better time than now. Myself, I like when things come together organically and "Reality Check" came together the way it needed to be and right on time.

In one of our private conversations you have told me that this project is going to be different from everything you have done so far. Now when this idea has became a reality I wonder how would you discribe "Reality Check"? Is it really that different from your previous albums?

Myself, I like when things come together organically and "Reality Check" did just that. It came together the way it needed to and right on time. It’s different than my other past projects in the sense that I wasn't trying to make any songs or manufacture a feeling musically for the listener. On this record I am just giving you my honest personal disposition, perspective and opinion of current state of things, life, our music, our culture and the universe that binds us, my opinion, point of view.

Rappers often say that what's matter the most in their music is the message they share with the audience. If you had to choose just a three key elements of your new album that you would like to get noticed by your listeners, what would you point out?

Well the first message is actually printed on the inside of the cover. It’s a quote from Mr. Rod Serling. It reads; "There is nothing in the dark that isn’t there when the lights are on".
My reasoning behind using this quote on the album was to address the state of unoriginality happening in hip hop and music period also as a metaphor for lacking of self belief, because we all have are own set of insecurities... but if we want to grow, learn, expand and become the better versions of ourselves and not just another follower, Well then, do we not need to face the dark, the unknown. Step out of our personal comfort zones to gain a clearer view of ourselves and the who we think we are. We all carry our personal issues, problems, fear’s or shadows per se with us throughout life no matter what time of day or night, in the light or in the dark. The first message; Face your personal dark, because there’s nothing in the dark that isn't there when the lights are on.
The second message can be found in the meaning behind the title of the album. Reality check means; An occasion on which one is reminded of the state of things in the real world. So the message is simple and plain, Wake up, wipe that sleep from your eyes, get off the internet, unplug from the system, shed your digital skin, go outside so you can breath in what's really going on in the world around you.
Third message would be, That energy flows where attention goes…So stay positive and push forward into your dreams! You can do anything!

Reality check can be defined as some sort of wake-up call. It makes you see the truth about the situation you're in or the truth about relationships you have with other people. What made you decide to name your album in that particular way? What does "reality check" mean to you?

Exactly… That’s how it was intended it to be felt. I titled the album reality check… to be blunt and to the point like slap upside the head. Personally reality check means just that, being faced with my the hard truths, the cold facts of life from lessons learned.

Tell me about your expectations related to this project. What should have happened to make you feel fully satisfied with the release of that album?

My expectations was just to get it out truly and that alone is very satisfying and anything beyond that is an added blessing. This interview, fan emails and personal interactions with everyday folks are all major extras to me. Although most satisfying to me is when people tell me how much a certain song helped them or affected them and their story behind it, along with hearing them hit me with my own words and or repeating my verse’s from different records.

As we say it in Poland success has many fathers. You have worked with other artists from your record label YesYal Records who have helped you during the recording process. Can you tell us a few words about them?

The album features most of the Yesyal camp.... I believe all the artists on the label are solid hard working people and not just in their artistry. Artist Myles West is our newest addition to the Yesyal family. Myles is an young talented RnB singer who is featured on tracks: "Better Take It Easy" and "You Can Do Anything". Myles is currently in the studio working on his debut single "Summer Love".

In your songs you seem to be self-confident and determinated man. But no one knows us better than us. How do you perceive yourself?

Yes, I absolutely believe in being a self-confident and determined person but without arrogance, rather to be humble instead. I view myself as a eternal optimist, no matter what my situation in life is I to make the best of things in order to stay positive for my loved ones, and my own peace of mind.

So this is one side of the coin. Now let's flip it - how do you think you are perceived?

Well now thats a tuff one because everyone's perception is going to be completely different from one to the next. I believe I ‘am perceived as you yourself describe me.

Well, your rhymes describe a certain story - the story of your life. You talk about your experiences and your feelings. But even the most creative mind may run out of gas one day. Do you ever worry that you will run out of ideas?

Music is my release, so I don’t worry about running out of ideas because life's a journey, so I draw my creativity synergistically from my surroundings.

What excites you the most about putting words on paper? I'm not asking about the technical side of it, I'm more about the emotions that accompany you while writing songs.

The answer is really the same as the question, it’s the release of energy and emotions, along with the healing that comes from it, then putting those words to music & being able to now hear and feel them that’s powerful stuff.

So what's next? What are your plans for the following months? I heard you have your own clothing line...

Yes indeed… Yesyal Fits apparel is extension of our music & culture passionately expressed through fashion. Visit Us at www.yesyalfits.com. Worldwide shipping available. Our plans for the near future are to continue building the Yesyal brand in new a creative ways and to continue releasing new music from myself and the other artists on the label.

Being a musician is still attractive to you? Have you ever thought about leaving it all behind?

It is still attractive to me because of my personal relationship with it, I do it for me and whoever rocking with me, but yeah can’t lie I’ve thought about a few times, but I’m still here.

And what’s more important to you: your life or your work?

Most important to me is my family & life, and my musical works will alway be derived from those sources.

Thank you for your time...
